I am helping my sister with her site, and noticed that her version of Wordpress is 3.2.1. I would like to update it to the current version (3.5.1.). Is it 100% safe to update it?
I know that when editing themes, it's important to set up child themes in order to have safe upgrades to Wordpress, but I do not know what her web developer (volunteer) did to create her site and if then, there is any danger to the current state of the site if and when we upgrade WP.

Ex: should I back up the site offline before upgrading, and then how do I go about restoring this if need be?
