If you want to keep the domain name, you can move it to any host of your choosing. I no longer have a wordpress.com site to take a look, but I think I began that process at the "Store" button at the Dashboard. I had to want 60 days before I could transfer the domain *name* to a different registrar, but you can move the actual domain at any time.
