JanetK on "getting a sitemap file"

The plugin for creating a sitemap will not write one because it cannot find the files. I have checked the folders. I have folders called:
log which seems to be all logs, app followed by a 9 digit number which seems to have the wordpress blog in it, 2 folders starting wsb followed by number which seem to have my website and my genealogy chart. The permissions on these folders are all rwxr-xr-x (or 755 if my understanding of CHMOD is right). I created two empty files called sitemap.xml.gz and sitemap.xml on my desktop using Unix and then tried to move them to the app folder assumed that was the right one to put them in (is it?). My gftp program would not move them because of permissions. I assume I have to create them using a different identity. I don't see any way to create the files on the host system (1and1). Can anyone help?
